Move over matcha, the buzzy new drink is moon milk and we turned to Meg Sutala, the Vice President of Marketing for Clover Sonoma, a leading brand behind this trend, to break down everything there is to know about the growing movement behind this ancient beverage.
theFashionSpot: What is moon milk?
Meg Sutala: Based on Ayurveda, one of the world’s oldest healing systems, moon milk blends herbs and spices in a way that is designed to promote well-being and relaxation. The drink’s unique recipe and ingredients aim to help the body respond to physical and emotional stressors.
tFS: Are there different variations?
MS: Moon milk’s basic staple ingredients can be mixed and matched to meet an individual’s taste. Other superfoods can be mixed in as well to complement the taste and add additional benefits (ie: cherries enhance flavor and also provide additional opportunities for the body to produce melatonin). Moon milk can be made with dairy milk or alternative milks, such as almond milk or oat milk.
tFS: What are the benefits?
MS: When made with dairy milk, Moon milk contains tryptophan. This essential amino acid transforms into serotonin and melatonin in the body — these are brain chemicals that help regulate sleep and mood. Magnesium, also found in milk, supports overall relaxation.
The use of milk itself has many benefits. For instance, it has been shown to hydrate more effectively than water, and it supports a healthy immune system. It contains plenty of protein, which is essential for many primary functions of the body.
tFS: What does it taste like?
MS: Moon milks are creamy and herb-forward (usually containing turmeric and cinnamon) with a touch of sweetness from honey. The most common variation is with turmeric and cinnamon and has an earthy, spicy aroma and taste. Sometimes ginger is added for a touch of warmth. Other popular variations are fruit or floral flavored for a touch of sweetness and to help promote calmness (i.e. lavender). Moon milks can also be used as a key ingredient in various recipes and taste can then be adjusted according to personal preferences.
tFS: Any alternatives for people who don’t like the taste?
